Canine Behavior and Cognition Conference

06/26/2015 - 06/28/2015
London, UK

Canine Behavior and Cognition:
Evolution, Genetics and Applications for Breeding and Performance

26th-28th June 2015
Courthouse Hotel, London, UK.

Focus of meeting:  This meeting is intended to showcase emergent research in any area of canine genetics and/or canine behavior.  Additionally, the meeting seeks to identify potential areas of collaborative research between researchers in genetics and behavior, and to identify promising early career researchers. Behavioral foci include evolution, cognition, behavioral measurement, prediction of behavioral capabilities, behavioral development and relevant applications for breeding and performance. Genetic foci include any area of molecular and quantitative genetics pertaining to dogs.  This meeting is in association with The 8th International Conference on Advances in Canine and Feline Genomics and Inherited Disease (http://www.caninefelinegenomicsconference.org/).
A special effort is being made to showcase posters from junior career researchers (students, graduate students, residents, post-docs, junior faculty).  To advance this effort, Royal Canin is funding 2 prizes of £500; one for the best poster with a genetics emphasis and one for the best poster with a behaviour emphasis. Awards also include a fast-tracked peer-reviewed paper in the Journal of Veterinary Behavior: Clinical Applications and Research, noting the award.
This is a rare opportunity, in an intimate meeting setting designed to stimulate productive discussion, which young researchers will not wish to miss.
Who will be interested in this meeting? This unique meeting will appeal to a number of groups.
Those interested in canine welfare know that behavioural issues are at the core of welfare concerns, and that the genetic basis of behaviour – and how it interacts with the environment - is key for evaluating and advocating for canine welfare.
Anyone using any kind of working dog (detection, police, military, SAR, disease detection, …) or service dog (hearing and mobility assistance dogs, guide dogs…) appreciates that behaviour, physical health and performance, and how we assess and predict performance, are of utmost interest. The role for genetic studies in physical and behavioural health of these dogs is enormous.
Breed fanciers who wish to know more about the development of breed-associated behavioural patterns will be interested in much of the research on behavioural development and phenotypes.
Researchers interested in the genetics of physical and behavioural illness in dogs and how canine health concerns resemble equivalent problems will find the discussions on genotype and phenotype, especially as they pertain to behaviour, brain function and cognition, stimulating and helpful.
Those interested in the most heavily researched canine molecular genetics topics as presented by many world-class researchers will find the discussions fascinating.
The accommodation at the excellent affiliated hotels is extremely heavily discounted for those registering early.  All meeting details – speakers, schedule, costs, hotel registration information, poster submission instructions – including award competition - and online registration forms – are available at:  http://caninebehaviourandgenetics.org/. The deadline for abstract submission for the poster sessions is 31 March with notification by 15 April. Early booking is advised in general as places are limited at this unique, intimate meeting.
